When I was a sophomore in high school back in the late 1970s, I had saved $2,000 in a savings account. I turned to my dad, who was a life-long investor, and said, “I want to do something with this money.”
“You should invest it,” he said. “In what?” was my immediate response.
“Standard Oil of Indiana.”
Figuring he knew what he was talking about, I wrote a check for $1,000, mailed it to the registrar, and a few weeks later, I was the proud owner of 12 1/2 shares at 80 7/8.
Yep, I made the cardinal sin of tying up half of my net worth in one stock.
And about the worst thing that could happen, happened. I got beginner’s luck.
Over the next couple years, the stock nearly tripled. This is easy money, I thought, and I became hooked on investing.
Not surprisingly, the stock eventually came back to earth and I sold it on the way down to help pay for college.
After college and grad school, I found my way to the financial services industry and haven’t looked back since.
In 2012, I started Belay Advisor, naming it after one of my favorite hobbies.
People always ask me what does “Belay” mean? Well, it’s a climbing term that describes a technique using a secure rope to help a climber safely ascend or descend a mountain.
As a recreational mountain climber, I’ve been “belayed” and I’ve been a “belayer.” Similarly, Belay is in the business of helping advisors and the firms that serve them safely and quickly reach their goals.

But in 2005, we moved to Wisconsin and our daughters ended up going to school at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
